Strange Things Mormons Say

You are an eternal being. Before you were born, you existed as a spirit. In the presence of a loving Heavenly Father, you trained and prepared to come to earth for a brief moment and, well, perform.

Gary E. Stevenson, Your Four Minutes

Where in the Bible can this man, or any person, find such nonsense? Nowhere in the Bible, or even in the Book of Mormon do we find that people existed before conception as “spirit children” sired by the LDS god-man and his many spirit wives and who are just waiting for human babies to occupy once they are conceived.

This whole idea is not only ludicrous, but it totally illogical. How can we possibly have existed eternally”!?!  In accordance with this theology, everyone on earth are brothers and sisters in the spiritual realm—and so when they become physical humans and marry they are committing incest!

Did They Really Say That?!?

And after the flood we are told that the curse [black skin] that had been pronounced upon Cain was continued through Ham’s wife, as he had married a wife of that seed.  And why did it pass through the flood?  Because it was necessary that the devil should have a representative upon the earth as well as God. . . .

Why is it, in fact, that we should have a devil?  Why did the Lord not kill him long ago?  Because he could not do without him.  He needed the devil and a great many of those who do his bidding to keep men straight, that we may learn to place our dependence upon God, and trust in him, and to observe his laws and keep his commandments.  When he destroyed the inhabitants of the antediluvian world, he suffered a descendant of Cain to come through the flood in order that he might be properly represented upon the earth.

LDS President John Taylor, Journal of Discourses, 22:304, 23:336

Where oh where to begin!

Firstly, we are not told in Genesis 4:15 exactly what was the mark that God gave Cain, but it certainly wouldn’t have been black skin color or it would have said God gave him more than a “mark.”

Secondly, the mark wasn’t a curse — it was a mark of protection!!  Thirdly, there is no evidence from Scripture that Ham’s wife was a descendant of Cain—that is just a made up idea by the Mormons.

Thirdly, nowhere in Scripture does it say that Cain was representing the devil, or that his offspring were representatives of the devil.  This, again, is an idea totally made up by the Mormons.

Fourthly, the idea the God can’t do without the devil certainly puts limits on God and His sovereignty!  The Mormon god proves to be incompetent.

Fifthly, how is it that the devil can do God’s bidding “to keep men straight”?  Isn’t that the work of the Holy Spirit in believers?

Lastly, explain why the devil needed “to be properly represented upon the earth”?

All this unbiblical nonsense comes about in order to shore up the false teachings of Joseph Smith.  These teachings include the lie that Satan is a brother of Christ rather than a being created by Christ (as the Bible teaches), that spirits in the pre-existence were all brothers and sisters (the Bible teaches NO pre-existent spirits); that these spirits chose to follow Christ or Satan and those who remained neutral received the curse of dark skin when they come to earth (pure racist ideology), and that Cain was apparently the first earthbound soul to have this curse (which begs another question about when this so-called rebellion took place); and that those who followed Satan became demons (whereas the Bible teaches that the demons are fallen angels, which are a different created being than are humans).

Mormons, you’ve been fed a lot of science-fiction fairy tales which totally contradict the truth of the Bible.  Learn the truth and leave Mormonism.

Mormonism Is Still Heretical!

Thus we see that the LDS Church still teaches the following:

1. God has not always been God, but achieved this position after years of self-effort.

2.  Heavenly Father and his wife, Heavenly Mother, were once mortals on another world, ruled by yet a different “god.”

3.  Heavenly Father and Heavenly Mother are resurrected mortals who have achieved godhood.

4.  The goal of the LDS couple is to achieve godhood and become a Heavenly Father and Heavenly Mother to their posterity.

5.  God, men and angels are the same species, just in different levels of achievement.

In other words, Mormonism is still a heretical offshoot of Christianity.

Mormons Are Divinity

The following are excerpts from an official LDS proclamation about the family.

THE FAMILY
A PROCLAMATION TO THE WORLD
The First Presidency and Council of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

ALL HUMAN BEINGS—male and female—are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny.

IN THE PREMORTAL REALM, spirit sons and daughters knew and worshipped God as their Eternal Father and accepted His plan by which His children could obtain a physical body and gain earthly experience to progress toward perfection and ultimately realize their divine destiny as heirs of eternal life.

Now, all of us who study Mormonism know they believe that men can become gods (sorry ladies, you’re just a goddess due to marriage to your god husband), but not too many of the average people on the street knows this.  Nor does the average person understand about Mormon pre-mortal theology.

These two paragraphs plainly demonstrate that Mormons believe all people (and all angels, as well as Jesus) are brothers and sisters in the pre-mortal existence, and that they have a divine nature which will help them to become gods in the afterlife.

Of course none of this is biblical, and the god they are children of is a false, non-existent god which Joseph Smith made up out of his wild imagination.  This is another bit of evidence proving that the LDS is not a Christian church.

Gospel Topics Essays

In 2013 the LDS church began posting a series of essays intended to show that they are being more “transparent” about their history and beliefs but, as usual for the LDS, they told mostly half-truths and even lies.  Even so, the information provided has been truthful enough that many Mormons have finally learned that sites like mine, which expose the LDS for what they are, have actually been telling the truth!  This becomes quite disconcerting for them, and many have left the LDS because of this.

The LDS has the following to say concerning the Gospel Topic Essays.
Recognizing that today so much information about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints can be obtained from questionable and often inaccurate sources, officials of the Church began in 2013 to publish straightforward, in-depth essays on a number of topics. The purpose of these essays, which have been approved by the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, has been to gather accurate information from many different sources and publications and place it in the Gospel Topics section of LDS.org, where the material can more easily be accessed and studied by Church members and other interested parties.

Notice that sites like the Utah Lighthouse Ministry, Mormonism Research Ministry, et al (including THIS blog) are considered “questionable and often inaccurate sources.”  Of course they’ve never demonstrated anything on these sites is ever inaccurate, but by saying so they hope to keep Mormons from learning the truth.

Mormonism Research Ministry has published responses to these essays so as to demonstrate where the LDS is not being as forthcoming as they claim.  Below are the topics of the LDS essays, the dates they were first posted, and the links to both the LDS article and the MRM commentary:

Random Good Articles About Mormonism

As usual, most of these articles will come from Mormonism Research Ministry.

Mormons claim they don’t worship Joseph Smith, but their hymns prove that is a lie.  Smith is treated as a god.

Which “First Vision” story is correct?  NONE.

Can Mormon families be together forever?

Neither your neighborhood Mormon nor the ones who come to your door are useful for knowing what true LDS teachings are.

Sexual Morality in Old Mormon Nauvoo.  Just a small example of the history of the rampant sexual immorality caused by Joseph Smith’s teaching about polygamy.

How can one really “get past Joseph Smith’s history” when his history proves what a hypocritical false prophet he was?!?!

What about the translating of the Book of Mormon?

Why is the Mormon Church not excommunicating Marriott?  Money, most likely.

When a Mormon tells you about their history and claims the Missourians were to blame for the Mormon war there, tell them the truth about what transpired.

What about the Mormon lie that Constantine decided what books went into the Bible?

Compressed Spirits Forget Pre-Existent Past

“When all these spirits [of God’s heaven-born spirit children] were sent forth from the eternal worlds, they were, no doubt, not infants; but when they entered into the infant tabernacle [body], they were under necessity, the same as our Lord and Savior, of being compressed, or diminished in size so that their spirits could be enclosed in infant tabernacles.

When Jesus was born into our world, His previous knowledge was taken from Him.  This was occasioned by His spiritual body being compressed into a smaller volume than it originally occupied. . . .  When this spirit was compressed, so as to be wholly enclosed in an infant tabernacle, it had a tendency to suspend memory. . . .

So it is with man.  When he enters a body of flesh, his spirit is so compressed and contracted in infancy that he forgets his former existence.”

Apostle Orson Pratt, Journal of Discourses, vol. 16, pg.334. Cited in “Mormonism, Mama & Me,” by Thelma “Granny” Geer, p.186

Spirits, having no real dimension, do not need to be compressed or compacted to fit anywhere.  And what biblical evidence do they have for any of this nonsense, especially since the Bible denies spiritual pre-existence (1 Cor. 15:44-46 — natural FIRST!)?  This story was obviously concocted to respond to questions about why we don’t remember pre-existing.

The convoluted stories cultists have to come up with to defend their false beliefs can be downright humorous!

Mormonism’s Pre-existence

The following is copied from the tract booklet, “Mormonism’s Pre-existence,” which was published by the Utah Christian Tract Society.  Utah Christian Tract Society was founded in 1956 and continued until 1990, when UCTS merged with Mormonism Research Ministry, who gave me permission to post it here.

==========================================

The Mormon teaching of the pre-existence of man is one of the basic tenets of Mormon faith.  This peculiar doctrine claims that "spirit children" are born of a heavenly father and mother and are eagerly waiting to enter human bodies.  Joseph Smith, the Mormon prophet, taught that everything was created spiritually before it was created naturally upon the earth.

TAMPERING WITH THE BIBLE
In his "Inspired Version," which is simply Smith's revision of the King James Authorized Translation, altered to comply with his philosophy, Smith changed Genesis 1:5 and made it read: "For I, the Lord God, created all things of which I have spoken, spiritually, before they were naturally upon the face of the earth..."  Then a new verse nine is added to the text and reads: "Nevertheless, all things were before created, but spiritually were they created and made, according to my word."  (See Joseph Smith's "Inspired Version," Gen. 1:5 and 9).

TRUE YESTERDAY — FALSE TODAY
Mormon Apostle Bruce R. McConkie, in his book, "Mormon Doctrine," stated: "In the pre-existent eternity various degrees of valiance and devotion to the truth were exhibited by different groups of our Father's spirit-offspring... Those who were less valiant in pre-existence and who thereby had certain spiritual restrictions imposed upon them during mortality are known to us as the Negroes...  Negroes in this life are denied the priesthood; under no circumstances can they hold this delegation of authority from the Almighty."  (1966 Ed. pgs. 526, 527).

It seems that for Mormonism in the progressive revelation claimed by the Mormon church, yesterday's "truth" becomes today's "falsehood," and by corollary, today's truth" will be tomorrow's "falsehood."  The pre-existence doctrine of Mormonism raises some difficult problems for the Mormon apologist.

HEAVENLY PARENTS?
Milton R. Hunter, a Mormon general authority, in his book, "The Gospel Through the Ages," Pg. 98, declares: "A complete realization that we are the offspring of Heavenly Parents - that we were begotten and born into the spirit world and grew to maturity in that realm - became an integral part of Mormon Philosophy.”

Brigham Young, second prophet of Mormonism, stated:  "God made his children like Himself to stand erect, and has endowed them with intelligence and power and dominion over all His works, and gave them the same attributes which He himself possesses.  He created man, as we create our children; for there is no other process of creation in heaven, on the earth, in the earth, or under the earth, or in all the eternities that is, that were, or that ever will be." (Gospel Through the Ages, Pg. 99 and Journal of Discourses, Vol. II, pg. 122)

ALL SPIRIT IS MATTER
The unalterable law and order of the universe in creation is to produce "after their kind.”  Mormon writer Lynn A. McKinlay in his book, "Life Eternal," page 80 says: "God Himself operates within the bound of eternal irrevocable laws," yet Mormon theology teaches that God is an exalted man "with a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man's" and that "All spirit is matter." (Doc. & Cov., Sec. 130:22-131:7).  The question we have often asked, and which as yet remains unanswered by Mormon theologians, is this: If "God made His children like Himself with the same attributes He Himself possesses..." why are His children not like Himself, with bodies of flesh and bones, instead of spirits needing to come into this world in order to take bodies?

BILLIONS OF SPIRITS — ONE FATHER
Again, in McKinlay's book, the following is recorded: "That by Him, and through Him, and of Him, the worlds are and were created, and the inhabitants thereof are begotten sons and daughters unto God.  Now what about this, only one father for all the billions and billions of inhabitants upon the earth?  So says the Scripture, (Mormon scripture, Doc. & Cov. Sec. 76:24) and not only this earth, but according to verse 24, the worlds...and the inhabitants thereof are begotten sons and daughters unto God.  Confirming this in our very own language, we have in a doctrinal exposition put out by the First Presidency and the Twelve of the Church, this statement:...'The purpose of these scriptures is to the effect that the Eternal Father, whom we designate, by the exalted name Elohim, is the literal parent of our Saviour Jesus Christ, and of the spirits of the human race, - the literal father Elohim is the father in every sense that Jesus Christ is so designated, and distinctively he is the father of spirits.'  The First Presidency and the Twelve agree here on this Doctrinal Exposition that we, all the human race, are literally the spirit offspring of a father - one father." (Life Eternal, pg. 35)

MIND BOGGLING
It staggers the imagination as to what Elder McKinlay is saying, in "spelling out" this Mormon doctrine of pre-existence so vividly in proclaiming: "Now what about this, only one father of all the billions of inhabitants upon the earth?  And not only this earth, but the worlds and the inhabitants thereof are begotten sons and daughters unto God.”

It is difficult to grasp the magnitude of the word billion.  A more realistic value is obtained when applied to the constant measure of time:

One billion minutes ago Christ was still on earth!  One billion hours ago the book of Genesis had not been written!

The world population today, numbers four and one half billion.

The people of planet earth could begin marching five abreast, past a given point, into eternity and the march could go on forever!

Before the world's population would pass the given point, new generations would have been born and entered the marching columns, continuing forever!

The number of people in the marching columns passing the given point would be - 300 every minute, 18,000 every hour, 432,000 every day, 157,680,000 every year - forever!

BUSY — BUSY — BUSY
Considering earth's population of approximately four and one half billion today, and the billions since Adam, who have passed on, and according to Mormon theology, all requiring pre-existent spirits, offspring of one heavenly father, it must have taken billions of years past for the one heavenly father to produce these "billions and billions" of "spirit children" just for planet earth.  The Mormon prophets claim "that the worlds (Doc. &  Cov. 76:24) are inhabited with "begotten sons and daughters unto God.”

Joseph Smith even described the inhabitants of the moon!  And Brigham Young claimed that there were inhabitants on the sun! (Young Women's Journal, Vol. III and Journal of Discourses, Vol. 13, pg. 271).  Also, according to "The Doctrinal Exposition by the First Presidency and the Twelve of the Mormon Church" recorded in "Life Eternal" pg. 35, "only on father is the father of spirits."  But let us return to earth.

Continuing to pursue this incredible Mormon doctrine of pre-existence, just to keep the present earth's population replenished would require producing 432,000 spirit children every day - forever!

Nativity requires a nine month gestation period, and as Brigham Young stated: "God made His children like Himself... He created man as we create our children; for there is no other process of creation in heaven, on the earth, in the earth, or under the earth, or in all eternities that is, that were, or that ever will be." (Journal of Discourses, Vol. II, pg. 122).  So, in the Mormon scheme of things, millions upon millions of polygamist heavenly mothers would have to be involved, and certainly the "one father" exalted-man-God of Mormonism would have to travel like streaked lightning, flitting about amongst his millions of wives, visiting each one for a split second, producing three hundred spirit children every minute - eighteen thousand every hour - four hundred and thirty-two thousand every day - one hundred and fifty-seven million, six hundred and eighty thousand every year - just to replenish planet earth!

YE MUST BE BORN AGAIN
It seems the reason that Joseph Smith and other Mormon leaders have gone to such lengths to try and establish the doctrine of things being created spiritually before their creation naturally, becomes clear when we realize that they desire to extend the supposition that we are all children of God, having been begotten "in the spirit" by God and a heavenly mother, and that God is our literal father.  They thereby endeavor to escape, and make void, the Bible doctrine of the absolute necessity of being born again in order to become a child of God. (John 3:3; 1:12-13).

It is simply amazing how people stumble at the simplicity of the truth as revealed in God's Word, the Bible, and are taken in and tricked by the irrational and inane philosophies of men!

TRUE SPIRITUAL BIRTH
The quotations from John 3:3 and 1:12, 13 are direct statements and cannot be misunderstood, misinterpreted, or taken out of context. "ye MUST be born again!”

The Bible also says: "Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual." (1 Corin. 15:46)  The truth portrayed in this statement completely destroys Mormonism's theory of pre-existence, and all of its senseless ramifications.  The Bible is also very specific in proclaiming the spiritual birth and how spiritual birth is obtained.

Jesus said, "Except a man be born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God." (John 3:3) and the Apostle Peter declared: "Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever." (1 Peter 1:23).  Being "Biblically born again" of the Spirit is a God-given supernatural event.  The great miracle of being truly "born again" and becoming the sons of God is explained in John 1:12, 13.  Notice that the Word of God is very explicit in declaring the miracle is God-given and completely excludes any works of man.  "But as many as received Him [the Christ of the Bible], to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name: Which were born, not of blood [it is not hereditary], nor of the will of the flesh [it is not of man's desires], nor of the will of man [it is not by man's direction, order or institution], but of God.”

The simple steps of being born again are, acknowledge your sin and need, then receive - accept - believe on - Jesus Christ as your own personal Saviour and Lord.  "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved, and thy house..." "Neither is there salvation in any other, for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."  (Acts 16:31; 4:12).  "Now is the accepted time, now is the day of salvation." NOW, TODAY, receive the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour and "you will find rest unto your soul."  (See 2 Cor. 6:2 and Matt. 11:28-30).

Mormonism’s Doctrine of Eternal Progression

This is the foundational teaching that affects virtually all other Mormon beliefs. "As man is, God once was; As God is, man may become." Much of the following is borrowed/adapted from Sandra Tanner‘s booklet, The Bible and Mormon Doctrine.

a. PRE-EXISTENCE OF MAN
(1) Intelligences: Mormons teach that matter has eternally existed, and they don’t really have an explanation as to how this came about. Intelligences were part of this pre-existing matter. Somewhere, somehow, the first man came into existence and, through his works, he became a god. Somewhere along the line he acquired a wife who was his goddess and they produced spirit children. Again, with no real explanation, the Mormon doctrine teaches that this progression has been eternal and in this line came the man who became exalted as a god over this planet.

(2) Spirit Children: All beings of which we know - humans and angels - were all born as spirits to Heavenly Father and his wife, Heavenly Mother. They all lived in the Spirit World, and this is known as the “First Estate.”

(3) War in Heaven: Prior to sending the spirit children to earth to earn their salvation, Heavenly Father wanted a way for them to have atonement for sin. Two of his spirit children, Jesus and Lucifer, had plans that they felt would be proper. Heavenly Father chose the plan by Jesus over that of Lucifer. Lucifer became angry and gathered a following of spirit children and fought a war against Jesus and his supporters. Lucifer and his followers lost the war and were cast out of Heaven with no chance to get a body on earth, so they became the evil forces on earth and will eventually be sent to the second death.

(4) Man reaps what he sowed in pre-existence: Those spirit children who followed Jesus now become born on earth depending on how well they performed for Jesus, and then they can progress through this “Second Estate.” Those spirits who remained neutral, who refused to choose sides between Jesus and Lucifer, were punished by being born on earth with dark skin. Skin color is the way in which we can tell how well people performed in the pre-existence.

b. EARTH: MAN’S SECOND ESTATE:
(1) The Fall of Adam: According to Mormons, Adam was supposed to sin or else he never could have had children, who then would not have had a chance to progress to godhood.

(a) “Adam, our first parent (1 Ne. 5:11), a "son of God" (Moses 6:22), was first placed on earth as an immortal being. … Blood did not flow in Adam's veins, for he was not yet mortal, and blood is an element that pertains exclusively to mortality. … Radical changes were in the offing for man, the earth, and all forms of life when the fall came. In that first edenic day, Adam was still in the presence of God… He had not yet come to that state of mortal probation in which are found the testings and trials requisite to a possible inheritance of eternal life. As yet the full knowledge of good and evil had not been placed before him; and, what was tremendously important in the eternal scheme of things, he could have no children. [my emphasis] But all these conditions, in the providences of the Almighty, were soon to change. According to the foreordained plan, Adam was to fall…. Adam was to introduce mortality and all that attends it, so that the opportunity for eternal progression and perfection might be offered to all the spirit children of the Father. In conformity with the will of the Lord, Adam fell both spiritually and temporally.” (Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, 2d ed. [Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1966], 268.)

(b) “Adam fell, but he fell in the right direction. He fell toward the goal…. Adam fell, but he fell upward.” (Sterling W. Sill, Deseret News, Church Section, 7/31/65, p. 7, cited by Tanner)

(c) “This was a transgression of the law, but not a sin in the strict sense, for it was something that Adam and Eve had to do!” (Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, Vol.1, p.121, cited by Tanner)

(2) Christ's mission: It was also necessary because of Adam’s transgression for the Only Begotten Son of the Father to come to redeem the world from Adam’s fall.” (Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, Vol.1, p.121, cited by Tanner)

(3) Christ's birth: Christ’s conception was by the way of literal sexual intercourse between the Mormon god and Mary, who he took as his wife. LDS claims she is still a virgin to mortal man because it was the god-man who had relations with her. Christ was then born as any human is born. This is a doctrine which officially the LDS church denies, yet it has been taught by their apostles, prophets and other teachers.

(a) “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints proclaims that Jesus Christ is the Son of God in the most literal sense. The body in which he performed His mission in the flesh was sired by that same Holy Being we worship as God, our Eternal Father. Jesus was not the son of Joseph, nor was He begotten by the Holy Ghost. He is the Son of the Eternal Father.” (Ezra Taft Benson, 13th President of the LDS, The Teachings of Ezra Taft Benson, 1988,pp.6-7)

(b) “Christ was begotten by an Immortal Father in the same way that mortal men are begotten by mortal fathers.” “Christ was born into the world as the literal Son of this Holy Being; he was born in the same personal, real, and literal sense that any mortal son is born to a mortal father. There is nothing figurative about his paternity; he was begotten, conceived and born in the normal and natural course of events.” (Bruce McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, pp. 546-7, p742. McConkie was an apostle, a member of the First Council of the Seventy, and a General Authority )

(c) “The birth of the Savior was a natural occurrence unattended with any degree of mysticism, and the Father God was the literal parent of Jesus in the flesh as well as in the spirit.” (Joseph Fielding Smith, 6th LDS President, Religious Truths Defined, p.44)

(4) The Atonement: The LDS teach that the atonement of Christ paid for the sin of Adam and paves the way for our individual atonement by our works. One citation will suffice here, although many more can be brought to bear.

(a) “The atonement of Jesus Christ is of a twofold nature. Because of it, all men are redeemed from mortal death and the grave, and will rise in the resurrection to immortality of the soul. Then again, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the gospel, man will receive remission of individual sins, through the blood of Christ, and will inherit exaltation in the kingdom of God, which is eternal life.” (Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, Vol. 1, p.123)

(5) Mormon Temple Work: This is where a lot of the works are done for “points” towards exaltation. There are elaborate ceremonies to “endow” members as “Temple Mormons” - qualified to perform baptisms for the dead and to be married for eternity, both of which take place in the temples. In order for exaltation, a Mormon man must have a wife and must be married in the temple. For those who died without hearing the gospel, they can hear it after death while in spirit prison and be baptized by proxy by someone doing the temple works. Without baptism, one cannot enter the celestial kingdom. Temple ceremonies developed mostly from Masonic ceremonies. The ritual required special clothing with Masonic symbols on them. Smith taught that the Masonic ritual was a corruption of the ancient temple ritual and that the Mormons restored it.

c. SPIRIT PRISON (Hell) OR PARADISE:
Upon death all spirits will go to one of these places. Those who have been baptized as Mormons go to Paradise, while all others go to Spirit Prison to repent. The spirits in Paradise preach the gospel to those in Spirit Prison. Those who repent and are vicariously baptized, will then go to Paradise for the first resurrection and into the millennium , while those who remain evil and refuse to repent await the second resurrection to judgment. Joseph Smith stated, “The greatest responsibility in this world that God has laid upon us, is to seek after our dead.” (Times and Seasons, Vol.5, p.616).

d. FIRST RESURRECTION/MILLENNIUM
Two great resurrections await the inhabitants of the earth: one is the first resurrection, the resurrection of life, the resurrection of the just; the other is the second resurrection, the resurrection of the damnation, the resurrection of the unjust…. Those being resurrected with celestial bodies, whose destiny is to inherit a celestial kingdom, will come forth in the morning of the first resurrection. Their graves shall be opened and they shall be caught up to meet the Lord at his Second Coming. They are Christ’s first fruits, and they shall descend with him to reign as kings and priests during the millennial era…. ‘then cometh the redemption of those who are Christ’s at his coming; who have received their part in that prison which is prepared for them, that they might receive the gospel, and be judged according to men in the flesh.’ (D.&C. 88:99). This is the afternoon of the first resurrection; it takes place after our Lord has ushered in the millennium. Those coming forth at that time do so with terrestrial bodies and are thus destined to inherit a terrestrial glory in eternity. (D.&C. 76:71-80.)” (Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, 2d ed. [Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1966], p.640.) “The great work of the millennium will be the salvation of the dead, and those who are on the other side will help us, too, by bringing us information…. GENEALOGICAL RECORDS TO BE REVEALED IN MILLENNIUM. Those who will be living here then will be in daily communication with those who have passed through the resurrection, and they will come with this information, this knowledge that we do not have and will give it to those who are in mortality saying, ‘Now go into the temples and do this work; when you get this done, we will bring you other names.’ And in that way every soul who is entitled to a place in the celestial kingdom of God will be ferreted out, and not one soul shall be overlooked. The Lord has not overlooked these things. He has seen the end from the beginning. Every name is recorded.” (Doctrines of Salvation, Vol.2, pp. 166-167)

(1) A particularly odd doctrine is that in order for a Mormon woman to be resurrected she has to be called forth from the grave by her husband, using the new name given to her in their temple wedding. Otherwise, women remain in the grave.

(2) Plural marriage will be restored in the millennium. Polygamy was put on hold by President Wilford Woodruff in 1890, but the doctrine of plural marriage is still very much in force as outlined in Doctrine & Covenants Section 132. This doctrine states that a man must have more than one wife to become like a god in the Celestial Kingdom.

(3) Animal sacrifices will be restored at the beginning of the millennium.

e. SECOND RESURRECTION:
During the millennium, those who did not go to paradise spent the entire 1000 years in Hell. At the end of the millennium they are resurrected to face judgment. “At the end of the millennium, the second resurrection begins…. These are the ones who have earned telestial bodies, who were wicked and carnal in mortality, and who have suffered the wrath of God in hell ‘until the last resurrection, until the Lord, even Christ the Lamb, shall have finished his work.’ (D.&C. 76:85) Their final destiny is to inherit a telestial glory. (D.& C. 88:102). Finally, in the latter end of the resurrection of damnation, the sons of perdition, those who ‘remain filthy still’ (D.& C. 88:102), shall come forth from their graves.” (Mormon Doctrine, p.640) “Truly he has declared that those who reject his truth shall be damned, but he has not said that when they have paid the penalty of their transgression they shall not come forth from the prison house. But on the other hand, he has said that after they have paid the penalty of their transgression, they shall come forth, and they shall receive their reward.” (Doctrines of Salvation, Vol. 2, pp.131-132)

f. JUDGMENT DAY: On this day, at the end of the millennium, everyone will be judged and it will be determined where they will spend eternity.

g. ETERNITY:
The three levels of heaven idea was developed in 1831. It reflects a universalist view of salvation. “Contrary to the views found in the uninspired teachings and creeds of modern Christendom, there are in eternity kingdoms of glory to which all resurrected persons (except the sons of perdition) will eventually go. These are named: celestial, terrestrial, and telestial - the glory of each being beyond mortal comprehension. (D.&C. 76:1 Cor. 15:39-42; Rev. 21). However, only the celestial kingdom is the kingdom of God where the faithful saints will gain their eternal inheritance. All who fall short of the glory of eternal life will in greater or lesser degree be damned (even though they dwell in a kingdom of glory), for their eternal progress will be limited, and they can never go on to an eternal fullness in the Father’s presence (D.&C. 132:16-17).” (Mormon Doctrine, p. 420) There is no progression from Kingdom to Kingdom.

(1) Celestial Heaven - the glory of the sun; where true members go. There are actually three levels in the Celestial Kingdom: “Rewards granted individuals in eternity will vary between and within kingdoms. Only those who are sealed in the new and everlasting covenant of marriage and who thereafter keep the terms and conditions of that covenant will attain the highest of three heavens within the celestial kingdom.” (Ibid) Part of this marriage covenant for the highest echelon is procreation. This is what is called “eternal life” in Mormon theology. These people reach “exaltation” and become gods, and will then go to different worlds to go through the whole process all over again. Those Mormons who were not married in the temple are in the two lower levels of the Celestial Kingdom where they still have immortality, but they will be servants and ministers of those who reached exaltation. They will remain unmarried.

(2) Terrestrial Heaven - the glory of the moon; for those who never knew the gospel according to Mormons, but were good people and accepted the gospel while in Spirit Prison. “And again, we saw the terrestrial world,… Behold, these are they who died without the law;… Who received not the testimony of Jesus in the flesh, but afterwards received it. These are they who are honorable men of the earth, who were blinded by the craftiness of men…. These are they who receive of the presence of the Son, but not of the fullness of the Father.” (D&C 76:71-78) Those in this kingdom will also remain unmarried and unable to procreate. They will be servants and ministers to those in the Celestial Kingdom.

(3) Telestial Heaven - the glory of the stars; for those who refused the law of God. “Most of the adult people who have lived from the day of Adam to the present time will go to the telestial kingdom…. They will be the endless hosts of people of all ages who have lived after the manner of the world rather than accept the testimony of Jesus; who have been liars and thieves, sorcerers and adulterers, blasphemers and murders …. ‘And they shall be servants of the Most High; but where God and Christ dwell they cannot come, worlds without end.’ (D.&C. 76:112)” (Mormon Doctrine, p. 778) “Though they attain a kingdom of glory, yet to all eternity they are damned, cannot go where God and Christ are…and are never completely free from the lingering remorse that always follows the loss of opportunity.” (Ibid., p. 235) “Those who live lives of wickedness may also be heirs of salvation, that is, they too shall be redeemed from death and from hell eventually. These, however, must suffer in hell the torments of the damned until they pay the price of their sinning, for the blood of Christ will not cleanse them.” (Doctrines of Salvation, Vol. 2, p. 133-134).

(4) Second Death: We have already seen that Satan and his followers were cast out of heaven and didn’t get to go through the second estate, the resurrection and judgment. So for eternity they go to the second death. The other class of people who go to the second death are “Those in this life who gain a perfect knowledge of the divinity of the gospel cause, a knowledge that comes only by revelation from the Holy Ghost, and who then link themselves with Lucifer and come out in open rebellion, also become sons of perdition. Their destiny, following the resurrection, is to be cast out with the devil and his angels, to inherit the same kingdom in a state where ‘their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.’ (D.&C. 76:32-49; 29:27-30...)” (Mormon Doctrine, p. 746) So who are these people? They are ex-Mormons who have rebelled against the Mormon doctrine and left the church.

CHRISTIAN RESPONSE TO ETERNAL PROGRESSION.
To begin with, there is only one God and there have never been, nor will there ever be, any more gods (Is. 43:10-11; Is. 44:6). Only God pre-existed before he created man, and God is not married nor did he have spiritual children. Adam and Eve rebelled against God when they chose to disobey Him. They were able to have children before their sin (Gen. 1:28), unlike the Mormon Adam and Eve. The Bible tells us we can do nothing to earn our salvation (Is. 64:6; Eph. 2:8-9), that we must put our faith in Christ to have our sins forgiven. Eternal life is just that and not a state of godhood and procreating. There is no second chance at salvation (Heb. 9:27). And while the Bible teaches that there will be a resurrection and a millennium, there is no marrying in heaven (Matt. 22:30). There is only one level of heaven and only those who have placed their faith in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus for their sins will be saved.
