Monogamy, or restrictions by law to one wife, is no part of the economy of heaven among men. . . . this monogamic order of marriage, so esteemed by modern Christians . . . is nothing but a system established by a set of robbers, . . . Why do we believe in and practice polygamy? Because the Lord introduced it . . . and the Lord’s servants have always practiced it. “And is that religion popular in heaven?” It is the only popular religion there.Brigham Young, Desert News, 6 August 1862
The only men who become Gods, even the Sons of God, are those who enter into polygamy.Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 11, p.269.
Additionally, Jacob 1:15 in the Book of Mormon calls polygamy a “wicked practice,” and Jacob 2:24 has God saying having multiple wives and concubines is abominable. In Jacob 2:27 it says, “For there shall not any man among you have save it be one wife; and concubines he shall have none.” This is reiterated in Jacob 3:5.
So did the Mormon god change his mind?
